Islamic Marriage at Al-Madina
Marriage (Nikah) is a sacred contract in Islam. Our Imams have performed hundreds of Nikah ceremonies and can guide both local families and those travelling to Middlesbrough. We perform ceremonies for the Teesside community and welcome enquiries from across the North East.

Contact the Masjid
Call or visit the office at least 4 weeks before your preferred date to check availability.
Submit documents
Provide valid photo ID for both parties, wali (guardian) details, and any relevant previous marriage dissolution documents.
Pre-Nikah meeting
Both parties meet with the Imam to confirm Islamic requirements, mahr (dowry), and conditions of the marriage.
Ceremony day
The Nikah is conducted in the masjid with witnesses present. A certificate is provided. For civil registration, a separate appointment with the registrar is required.
Islamic Requirements
- Both parties must be Muslim (or convert before ceremony)
- Two male Muslim witnesses of good character (Adool)
- A wali (guardian) for the bride — typically father or male relative
- Agreed mahr (dowry/gift to bride) confirmed before ceremony
- No existing conflicting marriage for either party
- Valid government-issued photo ID for both parties
Civil Registration
A Nikah conducted at the masjid is an Islamic ceremony. For legal recognition in the UK, you must also register your marriage with the local register office. We can advise you on this process — contact Middlesbrough Register Office at 01642 729008.
